Which is the easiest way to get to Machu Picchu? By train. Without doubt!
Many people have the concern of how to get to Machu Picchu, as there is no direct road between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to hike the famous Inca Trail to get to the Lost City of the Incas, and most senior citizens can do the trip. From Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, 30 km, the only available secure transport is by train. Train companies offer a range of options varying in schedules, itineraries, price, and luxury. Anyway, there is another way to reach Machu Picchu going through Santa Maria and Santa Teresa by car and then by train or walk, but given the dangerous unpaved road, we do not recommend it. The dirt road is narrow and winding, surrounded by deep hills.
There are two train companies that offer a range of options varying in price and luxury, while all trains arrive at Machu Picchu Pueblo (also known as Aguas Calientes): Peru Rail and Inca Rail and their trains depart from Poroy Station (a 20-minute trip from Cusco) or Ollantaytambo Station, located in the Sacred Valley (a 90-minute trip from Cusco). Once in Machu Picchu, you will only need to take a short walk to the bus stop to board the exclusive ecological bus service to the actual site of Machu Picchu (a 20-minute trip), which departs every 10 minutes. Trains departures are scheduled every day, with a variety of schedules and frequencies, despite the Hiram Bingham that operates every day except for the last Sunday of each month.
