Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

Fly over the Andes to Arequipa, an attractive colonial city of white buildings and colonnaded plazas, surrounded by the dramatic landscape of ice-capped volcanoes. Stay at selected hotel for 2 nights. In the afternoon visit the pretty 16th-century Santa Catalina convent and stroll around the main square, the Plaza de Armas. There are some intricate examples of Baroque architecture, all constructed from sillar, the local white volcanic stone. (None)

In the morning, see what lies in Arequipa’s countryside and explore the sublime surroundings of Arequipa. Gain insight into the region’s agricultural history with a visit to the distinct farming terraces of Paucarpata;  tour a grand colonial home belonging to the founder of Arequipa; visit the the Sabandia Mill and  enjoy a wonderful panoramic view from Sachaca. In the afternoon embark on a tour of Arequipa’s vast colonial sites, including the Franciscan Recoleta Convent, Casa del Moral, an 18th century home filled with colonial paintings, and the city’s Vallecito, St Lazarus and Cayma districts. Drive through the spectacular scenery of the Aguada Blanca National reserve, under the shadows of Ampato Volcano, towards Colca Canyon (approx 4 hours, partly on unpaved roads, with stops en route). The scenery is breathtaking, with the terraces of the Colca valley and herds of llamas scattered around. Overnight at selected hotel. (Breakfast)

Early morning excursion to Condor’s Cross, where magnificent condors can be seen flying over the canyon. Visit to local villages and the chance to see beautiful pre-Columbian terraces that are still farmed today. Head by road to Arequipa to board your departure flight. End of services. (Breakfast, Lunch)
