How do I get to Machu Picchu? By train. Without doubt!

Many people have the concern of how to get to Machu Picchu, as there is no direct road between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The roads end at Ollantaytambo a small Andean town located halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu Pueblo.  Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to hike the famous Inca Trail to get to the Lost City of the Incas, and most senior citizens can do the trip. From Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, 30 km, the only available secure transport is by train. Train companies offer a range of options varying in schedules, itineraries, price, and luxury. Anyway, there is another way to reach Machu Picchu going through Santa Maria and Santa Teresa by car and then by train or walk, but given the dangerous unpaved road, we do not recommend it. The dirt road is narrow and winding, surrounded by deep hills.

There are two train companies for tourists: Peru Rail and Inca Rail and their trains depart from Poroy Station (a 20-minute trip from Cusco) or Ollantaytambo Station, located in the Sacred Valley (a 90-minute trip from Cusco). Both companies offer a range of options varying in price and luxury, while all trains arrive at Machu Picchu Pueblo (also known as Aguas Calientes). Once in Machu Picchu, you will only need to take a short walk to the bus stop to board the exclusive ecological bus service to the actual site of Machu Picchu (a 20-minute trip), which departs every 10 minutes. Trains departures are scheduled every day, with a variety of schedules and frequencies, despite the Hiram Bingham that operates every day except for the last Sunday of each month.

How to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco?

The distance between Cusco and Machu Picchu are only 112km., however, there is no direct road.

The roads end at Ollantaytambo a small Andean town located halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Originally the only way to get to Machu Pichu from Cusco was on foot following the world famous Inca Trail or alternatives foot routes used by locals.

Nowadays, you can reach Machu Picchu by foot, train and a mix between road and train or road and foot.

A few years ago, you could also reach Machu Picchu from Cusco by helicopter. However, helicopters were banned as, according to government officials, the noise of rotors affects habitat for the spectacled bear and red-plumed Andean cock of the rock. So no helicopters are permitted to use airspace at Machu Picchu Archeological site or the surrounding 125 square miles.

Machu Picchu from Cusco by Foot:

There are two alternatives treks that can take you to Machu Picchu by foot. The world famous  Inca Trail to Machu Picchu  and The Salcantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

But for anyone with limited time (you will need at least 4 days for any of the treks), concerns about the physical challenge, or simply not keen on the lack of comfort during the trek, this alternative is out of reach.

Machu Picchu from Cusco by Road:

As mentioned above, there is no direct route from Cusco to Machu Picchu, the only road that indirectly goes to Machu Picchu is the road to Quillabamba and only the road trip could take up to 7 hours.

On the way, you will need to detour to Santa Teresa to finally get to the Hydroelectric (last train station) about 5 km. from Machu Picchu Pueblo.

From there, you could either walk or take the local train.

Anyway, getting to Machu Picchu by road is a true nightmare during the rainy season (November through March) as the roads would be almost inaccessible, while during the dry season the situation improves quite a bit but this is still a bit the “off the beaten track” road to Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu from Cusco by Train:

Peru travel solutions helped us plan an 8 day/9 night trip to Peru. Our trip was amazing and memorable. We chose a very active vacation which included white water rafting, hiking to Machu Picchu and Rainbow mountain in addition to various ruins. We had guides every day who were punctual in picking us up, knowledgeable about the sites and great to work with. Would definitely recommend this tour company. They made our trip easy and relaxing in terms of the details and logistics.

My friend and I have recently returned from an amazing sightseeing trip to Peru, where we travelled extensively on tours, organised by Tempo Tours. We received an excellent service with amazing attention to detail. Drivers and guides were extremely professional, knowledgeable, polite, prompt and couldn’t do enough to ensure we had a great experience. A big thank you to Ernesto who went out of his way to resolve any queries and give advice. Thank you all for giving us a trip to remember!

From beginning to end, our trip was super stress free. Our tour guide, Marden, was amazing and the fact he spoke English and knew so much about nature was nice because my hubby could do what he came to the jungle for, which was explore the wildlife!
